Wisdom  Rejected, Consequences of Blindness

As we come now to John 9 verses 24-34 we see the nature of wisdom rejected. Once more, the Pharisees set their weapons upon the words of he who was blind but now sees. “Give God the glory,” they proclaim, as though they have done as much. But then in the same voice, they declare the Son of Man a sinner. The text reads as follows:

“So they again called the man who was blind, and said to him, ‘Give God the glory! We know that this Man is a sinner.’ He answered and said, ‘Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see.’ Then they said to him again, ‘What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?’ He answered them, ‘I told you already, and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become His disciples?’ Then they reviled him and said, ‘You are His disciple, but we are Moses’ disciples. We know that God spoke to Moses; as for this fellow, we do not know where He is from.’ The man answered and said to them, ‘Why, this is a marvelous thing, that you do not know where He is from; yet He has opened my eyes! Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him. Since the world began it has been unheard of that anyone opened the eyes of one who was born blind. If this Man were not from God, He could do nothing.’ They answered and said to him, ‘You were completely born in sins, and are you teaching us?’ And they cast him out.”

How magnificent is this discussion. Here is man who has lived his life without physical vision, yet clearly he knows the content of Scripture. And note that he did not declare his “healer” a sinless man, but rather he merely declared the fact of the miracle. And if it sounds as though he is frustrated with the ways of the spiritual leaders, so-called, I would count that a right understanding. For what is so frustrating as to encounter religious leadership that lacks spiritual wisdom and true spiritual authority?
Blind leaders, they are, men and women alike, who set their salvation in the doctrines of men rather than upon the evidence of a miraculous change from the inside out. They count themselves born again Southern Baptist, or indoctrinated members of Jehovah’s Witness, or somehow, someway, by some means covered by education and training rather than washed in the blood of the living Savior. And sometimes they include the doctrine of the blood, but then they water it down with stale denominational baggage such that when a miracle that they cannot claim as their own passes by they are too blind to see the power thereof. Thus they cast out true worship, and change “… the image of the uncorruptible God into an image make like to corruptible man…” (Romans 1:23a).
And note the consequences of such spiritual blindness:

“Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves,” (Romans 1:24).

A Distinction Between True Vision and Spiritual Blindness

Thus the spiritual leadership of the age rejects the true works of God in favor of basking in the foolishness of men. This the consequences of blindness in the heart, this foolishness of wisdom rejected.
Finish out the text wherein the Scriptures read thus:

“Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when He had found him, He said to him, ‘Do you believe in the Son of God?’ He answered and said, ‘Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?’ And Jesus said to him, ‘You have both seen Him and it is He who is talking with you.’ Then he said, ‘Lord, I believe!’ And he worshiped Him,” (John 9:35-38).

In this section, we notice several important characteristics of God, and several primary characteristics of those who follow Jesus in Spirit and in Truth.

  • Jesus keeps track of those he touches (verse 35a)
  • Jesus seeks out those whom he would call (verse 35b)
  • The call is point blank and without any options for deviation (verse 35c)
  • God is not hidden from a questing mind (verses 36 and 37)
  • To follow Christ is to proclaim him Lord (verse 38a)
  • To follow Christ is to take him at his word (verse 38b)
  • True conviction leads to earnest worship (verse 38c).

Even today, his call is the same. His touch is power. His word is infallible. And he will answer your questions sufficiently to bring about hope, faith, and perseverance. Don’t delay. For some, delay results in spiritual blindness. See here the end of this tale of a man born blind who now sees. For although foolish spiritual leaders rejected him, in the end it is the spiritually blind who suffer the consequences of the ultimate rejection.
I close with these verses. Pay close attention. Listen hard. For you too may be on the verge of absolute spiritual blindness.

“And Jesus said, ‘For judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may be made blind.’ Then some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these words, and said to Him, ‘Are we blind also?’ And Jesus said to them, ‘If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, ‘We see.’ Therefore your sin remains,’” (John 9:39-41).

There are none so blinded as he who will not see. Today is the day of salvation. Let not your wisdom vanish into the void of unbelief. Seek Christ and He will loose you from Plato’s cave. He will not only give you light, He will be your light, and that light will shine from within you.
No matter your sin. No matter your failures. No matter that you cannot forgive yourself. No matter that you are too ashamed to speak of your past. Jesus Christ is ready and willing to break your chains, set you beneath the light, and guild you into a world too brilliant for this simple man to define.
Wisdom rejected remains forever more the consequence of spiritual blindness. Let not yourself be counted among the rejected.
