Reflections of a Sojourner – The Journey Into Darkness
Sample From Chapter I
In the depths of this spiritual darkness, I see forlorn shadows evading the light. I see bold whirlpools of erratically designed thunderheads. And I hear them erupt with a deafening rumble and a glass-shattering boom. Rip-lightning bridges the gaps between the clouds. Eerie after-glows come and go. Distorted images skirt the edges of peripheral vision.
The sour stench of spiritual madness draws near. Far, far below awaits a living death, a pale haze of cold-fire wherein dwells continuous pain and sorrow. Torrid currents of howling hell-winds rise from the farthest flames. The reek of scorched spirit-flesh taints the shimmering air. Faintly, I hear groaning, the cruel and dreadful gut-cries that belong, perhaps, to the
“…angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, and are now reserved in everlasting chains until the great day of judgment,” (Jude 8).
This is a fearful pit, this chasm of perpetual suffering from which a certain condemned rich man lifted up sorrowful eyes and spoke to Father Abraham,
“Have mercy on me,” he said, “and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame,” (Luke 16:24).
It was too late for the rich man in the parable of Lazarus. Perhaps it is even too late for many who yet live in rejection of truth. A great chasm lays fixed between eternal life and eternal death, and no one can pass over it save through the blood of a risen Christ. So many will fail to choose life.
And over these things, Jesus weeps.
